Prologue
Something light tapped and fell onto my hat. It didn’t seem large, because it didn’t hurt.
“It was an acorn.”
“An acorn?”
I raised my hand to check and felt around my hat. Nothing touched my fingertips except the corsage. As I fumbled, he looked on with a composed expression and lifted his arm.
He must be going to take it off for me.
I tilted my body slightly toward him so he could see more easily. His weight pressed against my hat. I could feel his hand moving as well.
But what he lowered his hand with was not an acorn.
“Where’s the acorn?”
“It’s on your hat.”
What he was holding was a corsage made by layering thin fabric into a round shape. As he said, it did look a bit like a fruit.
The corsage had been pinned to my hat. The pin was still attached to it.
It seemed that when I reached out, I had handed him the corsage. Or perhaps I had leaned toward him. I was the one who had placed my hand against his chest, and I was the one who had pinned the corsage onto the pocket of his jacket.
Our eyes met. Because I was slightly leaning in, he looked down at me a little more than usual.
Without realizing it. I had pinned it without realizing it.
Could he hear my breathing?
All I could see in front of me was the yellow, round corsage. I lifted my head again to look at him.
“Are you going to scold me for making a hole in your clothes?”
“How could I possibly do that?”
He tilted his head slightly, covered his mouth with his hand, and tried not to laugh too loudly as he smiled.
I wondered what would happen if Cedric recognized my eyes. Hoping he wouldn’t notice, I turned my head away—but in the end, I wanted to see him and met his gaze anyway.
They were beautiful eyes.
Yes, those were the eyes I wanted to see.
