Chapter 11
The end-of-month evaluation I took on the last day of July ended very well.
Not just for me, but for everyone.
[▷ EVENT: The CEO’s Surprise Visit]
[The CEO, who doesn’t like idols, will visit as a surprise judge of the end-of-month evaluation. Be careful not to fall out of the CEO’s favor with insufficient skill!]
[Event concluded! Calculating rank…]
[▷ EVENT: The CEO’s Surprise Visit CLEAR!]
[▷ Clear rank: A]
[Since you cleared with an A rank, no event penalty will be applied.]
[▷ Check event rewards]
Honestly, I thought this would be worth an S.
Does this system have a customer service center? I’d like to ask about the grading criteria.
Our group dance live got almost entirely positive feedback from the team leader, and in vocals everyone did well enough that even that stuck-up CEO called it decent in his own way.
Hyun Jaei did as well as she’d prepared, and Kang Sua, given a stage after so long, was flying around. Honestly, watching the CEO’s expression change moment by moment was the most fun.
I’d only checked the clear rank and put off checking the rewards because I’d been scattered in all sorts of directions for a while, but it seemed about time.
For the first time in a while, I pulled up the system window and clicked “Check event rewards.”
[For clearing the event with an A rank, you receive 50 quest points, 1 achievement point, 1 premium item roulette, and 3 regular item roulettes.]
[The achievement system has been unlocked.]
[Event achievement: Monthly Evaluation Excellence Award]
[You receive 1 achievement point.]
[Each time you complete an achievement, you receive 1 achievement point.]
[Achievement points can be used in the shop, and the unlock conditions for achievements are hidden.]
[Complete many achievements to collect honor and points!]
[Item roulettes can be obtained as system rewards or by spending points.]
[To use an item roulette, press the item roulette button added to the shop!]
…It’s unnecessarily perky, really.
My life is turning more and more into a game. Is this actually okay?
I’ll keep the item roulettes for now.
There hasn’t been any need to use items yet, so I’ll look into them slowly.
And the quest points I’m half-forced to keep.
After working myself brutally hard through my first month at the company, my stats went up a lot.

PROFILE
Name: Seo Jion
Age: 20
Agency: MusicProve
HP ♥♥♥♡♡
VOCAL Lv.55
DANCE Lv.41
SPECIAL – Composition/Producing Lv.53
Instrument: Guitar Lv.81
Instrument: Piano Lv.79
Instrument: Bass Lv.55
Trait – Tuning (A): Turning dissonance into harmony. A razor-sharp sense that notices anything off faster than anyone, and the quick problem-solving ability to quietly tune it all out without anyone knowing.
Vocal up 13 levels, Dance up 19 levels.
Even counting the two weeks or so since the evaluation, I’d raised my levels quite a lot in roughly four weeks.
From Level 40, it costs 80 points to raise one level, and since Dance passed Level 40, there’s nothing left that 50 points can raise.
Looking at it this way, the reward is pretty stingy… Typical of this petty system.
There’s no other function to use quest points on yet, so all I can do is let them sit.
Click.
Suddenly the door of the vocal room I was in opened, and Ko Hyunseo poked her face in.
“What are you doing that you can’t hear me knocking?”
“Ah, sorry. Um… something important? It’s mostly done.”
“What were you doing…?”
“Course registration.”
“Ah…”
Yes, kid. I’m a college student.
A college student who has to go back to school when the semester starts in September…
“Why did you call me?”
“Did you forget? We were going to work out at lunchtime today.”
“Ah.”
The thing I’d brushed off last night finally came back to me.
Am I possessed by the ghost of someone who died from not exercising… When I looked at Ko Hyunseo with a rather weary expression, she shrugged as if to say, so what?
“You were the one who said you’d exercise first. I never forced you.”
“…Right, it’s all my fault. Let’s go, let’s go…”
I said it with my own mouth, so what can I do, haha.
With a half-resigned look, I trudged out of the vocal room after Ko Hyunseo.
Listen up, past me.
Exercise… just say you’ll go alone…
“Eeek, so that’s why you’re working out with Hyunseo?!”
“Yeah… I really have no energy, so just go to practice.”
“No~ way. The T’s problem-solving method is so funny. If you’re worried, eliminate the cause of the worry… that’s exactly the kind of thing Jion would think of.”
“Of course, since I’m the one who thought of it…”
“Haha!”
She’s laughing so happily.
Having finished my workout before lunch, I’d had a light meal of chicken breast, salad, and tomatoes.
It wasn’t that I was dieting, more that after a hard workout I just don’t feel like eating much…
It’s the 2020s and we still haven’t developed the technology to get a meal from one pill? That has to be a lie. 1990s sci-fi movies said we’d have it by now…
Seeing me picking at my salad like a half-zombie, Kang Sua had scampered over excitedly and badgered me to tell her the whole story.
She made a huge fuss about how amazing it was that Seo Jion, who really hates exercise, was voluntarily working out, so I explained only the cause and effect, and this was the reaction.
“By the way, you did your course registration, right?”
“…Don’t tell me it’s today?”
“Don’t tell me you didn’t do it?”
“…I’m screwed.”
“Weren’t you trying to use proper and pretty language?”
“How can you say that in a situation like this?!”
I’d asked just in case, and it seemed Kang Sua had forgotten about course registration. An inexplicable sense of satisfaction made me burst out laughing.
Opposite to a minute ago, Kang Sua was frantically tapping at her laptop while I laughed away.
“Ah, stop laughing!”
“I don’t want to.”
“You look so petty, seriously…”
“I’m a bit petty by nature. My grudges last a hundred years.”
“You bastard…”
“Hey, I thought you used proper and pretty language.”
“You… bad friend…”
“That’s right.”
In the end, even after using all her brainpower, Kang Sua’s timetable ended up as all-day classes from first period with no free periods.
When I laughed and clapped, she turned her head away, calling me spiteful. What, are you jealous of my Friday off?
When I gave her no attention and just kept eating, Kang Sua’s anger faded quickly and she started whining with her forehead against the table.
“Should I just take a leave of absence? I have to prepare for debut in the second half too…”
“Wouldn’t attending school be even harder after debut? If you plan to graduate, you should attend this semester.”
“Wow… that’s right. That’s totally right, but…”
“But?”
“…Seo Jion is seriously a relentless T.”
“What does MBTI have to do with anything?”
“This kind of thing…”
While Kang Sua, having lost her fighting spirit in an instant, lay sprawled on the table, I tidied up my lunch spot and left.
First of all… I needed to do something about the new quest that had popped up.
[Updating goal progress…]
[Update complete]
[Setting the theme of the ongoing mission…]
[Reflecting the project subject’s “past life”…]
[The mission theme has been set.]
[▷ Theme: Singer-Songwriter Idol Debut]
[A new-concept idol who handles composition, lyrics, and even concept all on their own! An artist who has the pride and musicality of an indie powerhouse together with the sparkle of an idol debuts!]
[A quest suited to the set theme will be assigned.]
[▷ Quest: Write a Song for the Group and Its Members (D-30)]
[The first step toward becoming the group’s producer! Write a song that will get you recognized as a capable composer within the company.]
A new quest popped up this morning.
Along with the grand theme of “singer-songwriter idol.”
Only thirty days to write a song.
These bastards, do they think a composer is a vending machine that spits out songs when you press a button?
Composers as depicted in the media mostly seem to write when struck by genius inspiration, hit by a bolt of lightning… like being possessed and writing songs on the spot.
But… the reality of a composer is scrapping work, scrapping it again, scrapping it yet again, and endlessly revising until something satisfying comes out.
Sometimes you do the ridiculous thing of tossing a track in the trash because you seriously think it’s no good, then fishing it back out just minutes later…
Inspiration, ideas, motifs… these usually come up vague and blurry, so they need a great deal of polishing and revising before they become music worth releasing.
So inspiration is necessary, it is, but…
Ten days had already passed since the new quest appeared.
The semester was just around the corner, the evaluation was just around the corner too (fortunately I was preparing for it far more comfortably than last month), and the new project in the DAW program on my Applebook was empty…
The DAW program, commonly called MIDI (I’m going to call it MIDI from now on too; the distinction has lost much meaning), is a general term for composition software.
The only reason I use an Applebook, which is generally inconvenient, is that the MIDI software exclusive to the Applebook system is easy to use.
“Wow, seriously… I can’t get a feel for anything.”
After glaring at the monitor for a long while, I finally shoved the Applebook into a corner of the bed and flopped onto the mattress.
Honestly, I really have not a single idea.
I can’t even tell what to do or where to begin!
Since the quest meant to prove my ability as a composer, I’d considered bringing in Evergreat songs I’d written in my past life, you know?
But however I thought about it, they wouldn’t suit this team as it is now, so I dropped it. The phrase “a song for the group and its members” bothered me.
A title track tailored to Evergreat after a good amount of time since debut wouldn’t suit these kids now. The number of members has changed, and the circumstances are different.
For the mission’s “successful debut,” it needs to be a more powerful song and more dynamic choreography than back then.
To push the image the public wants from a small-agency rookie, the “hard-working, self-made, stage-hungry idol group with real skills,” and to get people saying “they really work hard,” half-measures won’t work at all. We have to show our absolute maximum.
And judging from the “theme” that popped up today, it doesn’t seem like it will end with writing a song.
Composition and lyrics aside, there’s a very high chance it will bring a hardcore-difficulty quest where I have to decide the concept as well.
In that case, wouldn’t it be right to sketch from the start with the debut album concept fully in mind?
What suits our team… these members as they are now? I’d been thinking for ten whole days, but I still hadn’t found an answer.
I opened the program at random and tried writing something, but all of it was off.
It isn’t a proper working environment, and song work needs some time and breathing room too.
My head… isn’t turning well.
Is it that I don’t want to do it because I’m being forced, or do I really just have nothing coming to mind…?
Just when my head felt like it would split from one thought after another, there was a knock, and the door opened.
“Jion unnie… eek?! What, unnie, what’s wrong?”
“Hi, Hyerin. Well, life isn’t going my way…”
“Because of what? …Is it because of working out with Hyunseo unnie?”
“…That’s part of it. Does that girl have infinite stamina?”
“Someone like Hyunseo unnie isn’t the type to work out hard, though, so maybe you’re a bit weak, unnie?”
“…I forgot for a second. That you’re a former athlete…”
“Ahaha, I had the best stamina even in my athlete class. I got praised every day for staying fresh even after a free skate run-through.”
“Go away. I don’t need a younger sister who can’t sympathize with the pain of exercise…”
At my words, Joo Hyerin laughed happily for a while as if she’d heard something funny, then handed me my phone and left.
I’d wondered where on earth I’d put it, and apparently I’d left it at the gym, and Joo Hyerin, who goes to the same gym, found it…
The <Working Out with Ko Hyunseo Project> is still going smoothly even now, past mid-August.
I’d thought I’d adapt as I kept going…
As you can see, adapt my foot. I still feel like I’m dying, to the point of leaving my phone behind. I guess I leave my mind there too.
At this point I have to admit it.
I’d thought my stamina had gradually turned to trash until I reached twenty-five, but in reality it had gone from trash to a hopeless level of trash…
Still, thanks to going to exercise steadily since regression, my stamina itself seems to be improving bit by bit. Muscle is slowly building on my body that used to be unpleasantly skinny, and I can finally put proper strength into my dancing!
Lying on the bed, I quickly checked my phone.
There didn’t seem to be any important messages, just a semester kickoff gathering notice… I can’t go to that.
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: Coming to the kickoff?
Huh, what’s with this unnie? The master of leaving messages unread, contacting me first…
My gaze froze on one notification I spotted while checking the alerts.
Sim Yujeong is a university senior I’d been fairly close with since my exam prep days, and the unnie who first taught me how to use MIDI. About three years older than me? She helped me a lot in many ways.
The Applebook I use now is also a device I bought cheap secondhand from her at the start of the semester, so without Sim Yujeong I probably wouldn’t have any way to use MIDI right now…
No can’t go to the kickoff –
Kinda busy these days –
What’s up?? Surprised you texted first –
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: lol this brat
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: can’t tell if you’re my student or my sibling or my nemesis
So what’s up –
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: your mom contacted me
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: I don’t know anything so I just said I didn’t know
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: wondered if you’re even alive
Oh sh-
Is she insane lol –
Sorry I just ignored all contact over break –
Just block her, sorry… –
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: what happened this time
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: that made you ignore contact
Oh right unnie I’m probably becoming a singer? –
She freaked out when I mentioned that so I just –
ignored everything… –
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: ???????????
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: for real?
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: am I actually chatting with Seo Jion right now?
…Is me becoming a singer really that shocking?
For a moment I almost felt hurt.
But well, this unnie would react like that…
When I was going to the prep academy for exams, she kept nudging me every day to major in singer-songwriting, and I still applied for composition anyway. That incident happened.
I’m genuinely hurt –
People can change a little –
Come to think of it, Sim Yujeong’s studio is near here, isn’t it?
The system never said not to get help from others, and though it hasn’t happened yet, I’d collaborated with this unnie several times…
I composed a new message into the messenger, which hadn’t gotten a reply yet.
Unnie are you interested in working on an idol album? –
I think you probably are –
but just in case –
asking out of courtesy –
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: I am, yeah
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: why do you ask?
Deciding on a concept and theme calls for brainstorming.
You need a process of putting out ideas as they come and filtering them, and it’s better to have two people throwing out ideas than one.
OK –
Once the semester starts I’ll storm into your studio myself –
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: ah what is it;
I’ll tell you when I get there –
See you after the semester starts ㅎ –
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: ;;;
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: at least say something properly
I locked my phone again with a satisfied expression.
Most recent popular music is collaborative work. A school connection won’t seem strange to the company, and the system should cut me this much slack, humanly speaking.
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: you don’t mean
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: the singer thing
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: idol?
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: considering your temper
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: it really really seems impossible
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: but I’m like what if, don’t tell me;
…Wow, what sharp instincts. She got it right away.
I shivered slightly at the popup notifications appearing over the lock screen.
Once September comes, I’ll have more to do, but…
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: hey
- Seojeong 2nd-yr Composition Sim Yujeong: is it really true?
I’ve started to look forward to the new semester.
