Chapter 11
All the bad maids defeated!
I knew my plan was right!
“Little mouse. I’ll tell you where I hid the toy. When you see my sister, take the ball there and leave it!”
“Ohh? You want a mouse to show itself to humans? That’s quite the daring task you’re asking of me…”
“Mm-hmm! Everything’s better when it’s bigger!”
“But will your fierce and terrifying master really fall for something like a toy?”
“Yes! Absolutely! My sister wants my toys. She always wanted to take them from me before! Maybe she wants to play with toys too!”
I’ll tempt her by subtly showing off my toy.
Then, while pretending to look for the toy I hid in the annex, I’ll accidentally find the embezzlement ledger!
After I show her the ledger, my sister will drive out the bad maids!
And then my sister’s dresses will sparkle again.
I squatted in the mansion hallway, bringing a hand to my mouth as I tried to giggle to myself.
But then, out of nowhere, a knight appeared and scooped me right up.
“It’s the young miss.”
“Gasp—w-who are you?”
“I’m a knight guarding the outside of Lady Chloe’s estate. Lady Chloe said it’s late, so you may sleep here tonight.”
So now that all the maids are gone, the knights are coming…—no, that’s not the point!
I kicked my tiny, useless legs in protest.
“That tickles, haha.”
…The muscular knight didn’t budge at all.
Dangling in his arms as he walked down the corridor, I gave a small smile.
The worn cuffs of my sister’s dress, the dusty hem of her skirt—they’ll all be sparkling clean again now, right?
Tonight, I’m going to stretch out my round little human paws and sleep soundly!
‘Even if I don’t get sweet potatoes or praise, it’s okay. I defeated all the bad people.’
I tried hard to keep my cheerful expression.
But for some reason, my face kept trembling.
I think I knew why.
But.
But still, just a little…
“Um.”
“Yes?”
“Is… Lady Chloe not coming to see me?”
“Ah…”
The knight trailed off.
“……So she’s not coming.”
Since I did such a good job playing ‘Catch the Maids,’ I should get head pats and sweet potatoes.
Still, I bravely lifted the corners of my lips.
‘It’s okay. I can just ask the maid unnie for a sweet potato!’
I slept alone bravely yesterday too.
Sleeping alone isn’t so bad.
Just then, the knight pulled a golden bottle from his pocket.
“Actually, when Lady Chloe came upstairs earlier, she threw this bottle at me—… I mean, she gave it to me.”
“Gasp, sweet potato color! That’s super precious!”
“That’s right. It’s a very precious golden potion. She told me to spray this rare potion on Lady Coco’s back and neck.”
I tilted my head in confusion, then let out an “Ah.”
Now that I think about it, the maids had lifted me roughly. I’d even been shoved against a wall.
In the process, I must have gotten a few small scratches—and my sister must have seen them.
I obediently squeezed my eyes shut.
“Please spray it now!”
The knight carefully sprayed the potion over me.
It stung for a moment, then I felt the wounds closing.
I touched my softened shoulder and let out a small giggle.
‘It’s okay even if my sister doesn’t recognize me yet.’
My sister is still the same.
She’s someone as warm as sunlight—someone who can’t stand seeing even the smallest wound on me.
Someday, she’ll tell me, “Coco, I love you the most in the world.”
Still dangling in the knight’s arms, I thought to myself.
My heart still aches a little in one corner.
But today is better than yesterday.
I think tonight will be a night with less tossing and turning.
