Episode 1: It’s a Struggle Pretending to Be Human Every Day
0.
I knew very well how arduous it was to survive as a demon in the human world.
After all, demons were evils that rightfully ought to be eradicated.
So, I tried my utmost to live out my long, slender life in a manner befitting a human—no, befitting an imperial princess. But then…
“It’s alright, Dana. If anyone suspects you, we’ll eliminate them for you.”
All sorts of adversities, hindering my benevolent human act, began to arrive.
“Wait, wait. Hold on.”
I struggled to calm my heart and looked at the black-haired man about to commit an outrageous act. At my plea, he tilted his head in confusion.
“Put that down.”
“Put what down?”
“That dagger you’re holding to the Emperor’s throat.”
The man then furrowed his brow as if to ask what the problem was.
“Don’t worry. No one will know. Because this is a perfect locked room.”
As if agreeing with his words, a familiar voice came from behind me.
“That’s right, Your Highness! I confirmed it. No one will come here for the next hour!”
It was my most trusted maid. She seemed to have single-handly breached the imperial palace’s stringent security and pinpointed the perfect timing for an assassination.
Following that, the masked figure beside the black-haired man added,
“We won’t leave a trace. I’m here, after all. I’ll perfectly fabricate the scene so no one knows we were involved.”
Not to be outdone, the robed woman keeping watch by the window declared in a cold voice,
“We don’t need your help! If it seems like we’ll be discovered, I’ll just blow everything away with the timed explosive spells I’ve laid throughout this room!”
‘You’ve planted bombs in the Emperor’s bedroom?’
I unconsciously raised my head. I wished I could at least see the vast night sky, but the gloomy ceiling only made my heart feel more stifled.
‘This is strange. Surely, overcoming hardships is what makes a good human, right?’
Why have they, the ones I saved, become the hardship itself?
No one answered my question.
Be that as it may, the four people who claimed I saved them pointed at the Emperor and spoke. This time, in reverse order.
“So, Your Highness!”
“What shall we do?”
“We’re ready too!”
“Shall we kill the Emperor?”
I never dreamed that I, a demon, would end up having to teach them what it means to be human.
