chapter 03

Jiang Zhe was one of Feng Tingshen’s personal secretaries.

When he saw Rong Ci’s resignation letter, he was extremely surprised.

He was one of the few people in the company who knew about the relationship between Rong Ci and Feng Tingshen.

Anyone familiar with Feng Tingshen knew that his heart was never with Rong Ci.

After marriage, he treated her coldly and rarely came home.

In order to get close to and win over Feng Tingshen, Rong Ci chose to join the Feng Corporation.

Her initial goal was to become Feng Tingshen’s personal secretary.

But Feng Tingshen refused.

Even when the old master personally intervened, it was useless—Feng Tingshen still wouldn’t agree.

In the end, Rong Ci had no choice but to compromise and stay in the general secretary department, becoming just one of Feng Tingshen’s many ordinary secretaries.

At first, Jiang Zhe worried that after Rong Ci joined, she would stir up chaos in the department.

But the result was far beyond his expectations.

Although Rong Ci occasionally used her position to get closer to Feng Tingshen, she always picked her timing carefully and never went overboard.

In fact, perhaps to make Feng Tingshen look at her differently, she worked very diligently and proved to be highly capable. Whether during pregnancy, childbirth, or any other time, she always followed company regulations and never asked for special treatment.

After a few years, Rong Ci was promoted to team leader of the secretary department.

Jiang Zhe had always seen the deep affection Rong Ci had for Feng Tingshen.

To be honest, he had never imagined she would resign.

He didn’t believe she’d be willing to do it of her own accord.

For her to resign now, he figured something must have happened between her and Feng Tingshen—something he didn’t know about—that led to Feng Tingshen ordering her to leave.

Rong Ci was highly competent. Although it was a pity to lose her, Jiang Zhe still handled things officially:
“I’ve received your resignation letter. I’ll arrange for someone to take over your work as soon as possible.”

“Alright.”

Rong Ci nodded, then turned and went back to her desk.

After working for a while, Jiang Zhe started his regular online report to Feng Tingshen.

As they were wrapping up, he suddenly remembered Rong Ci’s resignation.
“Oh right, President Feng, about—”

Although he’d told Rong Ci he’d handle the transition soon, he still wanted to gauge Feng Tingshen’s attitude.

If Feng Tingshen wanted her gone immediately, Jiang Zhe would arrange it that very day.

But just as he was about to bring it up, he remembered that when Rong Ci had joined the company, Feng Tingshen had explicitly said that all matters concerning her should be handled according to company policy—no need to report them to him specially.

He wouldn’t interfere.

And indeed, that had always been the case.

Over the years, Feng Tingshen had never once asked about Rong Ci’s affairs in the company.

Even when they crossed paths at work, he treated her as though she were a stranger.

In recent years, when they considered promoting Rong Ci because of her excellent performance, they’d even brought it up to Feng Tingshen first, worried he might disapprove.

They’d hinted that if he was uncomfortable, they could drop the idea.

At that time, Feng Tingshen had frowned impatiently and reiterated that he wouldn’t interfere, telling them to follow regulations.

He’d even said that from then on, they didn’t need to ask him about anything concerning Rong Ci again.

Seeing Jiang Zhe hesitate, Feng Tingshen frowned.
“What is it?”

Jiang Zhe snapped back to attention.
“Nothing.”

Since Feng Tingshen already knew about the resignation but hadn’t mentioned it, it clearly meant the matter wasn’t important to him.

So Jiang Zhe decided to handle it just like any other routine case.

After the video call ended, Feng Tingshen hung up.

“What are you thinking about?”

At noon, a colleague suddenly patted Rong Ci’s shoulder.

Rong Ci came back to her senses and smiled. “Nothing.”

“Not calling your daughter today?”

“Mhm, not today.”

Normally, she called her daughter twice a day—once at 1 a.m. and once around noon.

Everyone in the office knew about it.

But what they didn’t know was that her daughter’s father was their company’s big boss.

After work, Rong Ci went to the market, bought some groceries and a few potted plants, and went home.

After dinner, she went online to check updates about a technology expo.

When she was done, she made a call.
“Reserve me a ticket for next month’s tech exhibition.”

“You sure?” the person on the other end replied coolly. “The last two times you asked for tickets, you never showed up. Those tickets are priceless to most people, and you just wasted them.”

The country’s annual tech expo was a huge event in the industry, and not everyone could get a ticket.

Their company had received a few exhibitor slots, and many top employees had been eager to attend.

Every ticket was extremely valuable.

“If I don’t go this time, I won’t bother asking you again in the future.”

The person didn’t reply, just hung up.

Rong Ci knew that meant agreement.

She smiled faintly.

What she didn’t say was—she wanted to return to the company.

She had been one of the founding partners, but when the company was just getting off the ground, she chose to marry and have a child, stepping away from the business to focus on her family. That decision completely disrupted their development plan and caused them to miss many opportunities.

Her colleagues had been both angry and disappointed with her.

For years, they had barely stayed in contact.

Now, she truly wanted to return—but after years of focusing solely on family, she’d fallen far behind the fast-moving industry.

She worried that jumping back in unprepared would only slow things down.

So she planned to spend some time catching up on the latest trends and getting familiar with the industry again before making a concrete decision.

In the following days, Rong Ci worked seriously during office hours and spent her evenings on her own projects.

She didn’t reach out to her daughter or to Feng Tingshen.

Of course, they didn’t contact her either.

That didn’t surprise her.

Because for more than half a year now, she’d been the only one trying to keep in touch—while they merely responded passively.

A Country (Abroad).

Feng Jingxin had now developed a habit: every morning after waking up, she would call Aunt Lin Wu.

That day, as usual, she called right after waking.

But not long into the call, she suddenly burst into tears.

Because Lin Wu had just told her some terrible news.

“Aunt Wu is going back to China!”

Feng Jingxin was heartbroken. After the call, she immediately phoned her father.
“Daddy, did you know about this?”

In his office, Feng Tingshen was flipping through documents. “Yes.”

“When did you know?”

“For a while now.”

“Daddy, you’re mean…” Jingxin sobbed, hugging her pink pig plush tightly. “Why didn’t you tell me? I don’t want Aunt Wu to leave! If she goes back, I don’t want to study here anymore—I want to go back to China! Waaaah!”

Feng Tingshen’s voice was calm. “That’s already being arranged.”

Jingxin sniffled. “W-what do you mean?”

“We’re going back to China next week.”
