Ten-year-old Sara knew her parents’ names and her address.
She just hated the idea of going back there more than anything in the world.
When the young girl shook her head, close to tears, Eun-young looked flustered and held out her hand.
“Well, it’s late. Wanna come stay at my place tonight?”
“Sara!”
“Unni.”
“You always bring stuff when I tell you not to.”
“It’s all for me.”
“Yeah, right. You barely eat. Give it here, I’ll carry it. But look at you—did you lose even more weight?”
“Is Sara here?”
The peeling old gate creaked open, releasing the scent Sara missed most.
She smiled without calculation or pretense, truly and brightly.
“Mister, how have you been? How’s your back?”
“Same as always. Eun-young’s mom! Sara’s here! Get off the phone!”
“Oh, Sara! You’ve gotten even skinnier since the last time I saw you. Jinyoung! Come out, Sara’s here!”
“What? Sara’s here?”
“Sara Auntie!!”
The atmosphere turned cheerful and noisy in seconds.
Everyone stroked Sara’s back or arms, voicing their concern.
“Sit down! Mom made tons of samgyetang just for you.”
Jinyoung grinned and sat her at the center of the table.
A steaming whole chicken was placed in front of her.
Eun-young’s family chattered away, sitting around her.
“Sara, you won some kind of award, right? You were even on the 9 o’clock news!”
“Dad, it’s the Atre Award! First Korean to win it, no less!
