chapter 02

It was past nine in the evening when Feng Tingshen and his daughter returned home.

Feng Jingxin held tightly onto the hem of her father’s coat, getting out of the car slowly and reluctantly.

Because her mother was home today, she hadn’t really wanted to come back tonight.

But Aunt Wuwu had said that her mother came all the way here just to spend time with her and her father—if they didn’t come home, her mother would be sad.

Her father also said that if they didn’t come back tonight, her mother would insist on following them on their boat trip tomorrow.

So, she had no choice but to agree to come home.

Still, she couldn’t help but worry and muttered gloomily, “Dad, what if Mom insists on coming with us tomorrow?”

“She won’t,” Feng Tingshen said confidently.

In all the years they’d been married, although Rong Ci often tried to find ways to spend more time with him, she still knew her place.
As long as he showed his stance, she never dared make him unhappy.

In Feng Jingxin’s memory, her mother had always been obedient to her father.

Since her father said she wouldn’t come, that meant she definitely wouldn’t.

Feeling reassured, Feng Jingxin’s mood brightened. The gloom on her face vanished as she skipped happily into the house and told Aunt Liu she wanted to take a bath.

“Alright, alright,” Aunt Liu said quickly, then remembered what Rong Ci had asked her to do. She handed an envelope to Feng Tingshen. “Sir, Madam asked me to give this to you.”

Taking the envelope, Feng Tingshen asked casually, “Where is she?”

“This… Madam packed up and flew back home around noon. Didn’t you know?”

His steps faltered as he turned his head slightly. “She went back?”

“Yes.”

As for why Rong Ci had suddenly come to Country A, Feng Tingshen had never given her the chance to explain—nor did he care.

Hearing that she had left, he felt nothing in particular.

Feng Jingxin, however, was a little surprised.

When she heard the news, a faint sense of disappointment rose in her heart.

She had thought that if Mom wasn’t going on the sea trip with them tomorrow, it would actually be nice to have her around tonight.

Besides, her hands often hurt when polishing seashells—she had wanted Mom to help her finish it.

Rong Ci and Feng Tingshen hadn’t seen each other for several months. She had finally come all the way here, yet didn’t even manage to see him once. Aunt Liu remembered that Rong Ci’s face hadn’t looked very good when she left, so she couldn’t help reminding him, “Sir, Madam didn’t look well when she left—she seemed upset.”

At first, Aunt Liu had thought that Madam must have had something urgent back home.
But now, realizing that Mr. Feng hadn’t even known she’d returned home, she sensed something was off.

Upset?

Rong Ci had always been the patient, gentle one in front of him.

So she could get angry too?

That was… new.

Feng Tingshen gave a small, indifferent laugh and brushed off Aunt Liu’s words before heading upstairs.

When he returned to his room and was about to open the envelope Rong Ci had left him, his phone rang—it was a call from Lin Wu.

He answered, tossed the envelope aside without a thought, and left the room.

A short while later, the envelope slipped off the bed and fell to the floor.

That night, Feng Tingshen never came home.

The next morning, when Aunt Liu came upstairs to clean, she saw the envelope on the floor. Recognizing it as the one Rong Ci had asked her to deliver the night before, she assumed Mr. Feng had already read it and simply put it away in the cabinet.

After getting off the plane, Rong Ci went straight home and headed upstairs to pack her things.

After all, it had been six years—there were still plenty of her belongings in the house.

But she only took a few changes of clothes, some daily necessities, and a few professional books.

After their marriage, Feng Tingshen had sent living expenses every month—to two different bank cards: one for her, one for their daughter.

But Rong Ci had always used her own card for daily spending.

She had never touched their daughter’s card—not once.

Moreover, because she loved Feng Tingshen deeply, whenever she went shopping and saw clothes, shoes, cufflinks, or ties that suited him, she couldn’t resist buying them.

As for herself, her job kept her expenses low. And since her heart and mind were always full of thoughts for her husband and daughter—wanting to give them only the best—most of the money Feng Tingshen gave her every month ended up being spent on the father and daughter.

Under such circumstances, there shouldn’t have been much left in her account.

However, over the past year or so, since her daughter had mostly been living with Feng Tingshen in Country A, Rong Ci hadn’t had many chances to buy things for them.

Now, she still had more than thirty million left in the account.

It wasn’t much in Feng Tingshen’s eyes, but to her, it was no small sum.

Since it was money that rightfully belonged to her, Rong Ci didn’t hesitate—she transferred it all to her new account.

Leaving both old cards behind, she dragged her suitcase out of the house without looking back.

She owned a small apartment near her workplace—just over a hundred square meters.

Four years ago, she had bought it to help a friend who was struggling to sell property. She’d never lived there before, but now it finally came in handy.

The place had been maintained regularly, so it wasn’t dirty. After a quick cleaning, she could move in right away.

Exhausted from the day, she washed up and went to bed around ten that night.

“Ding ding, ding ding, ding ding—”

The harsh alarm jolted her awake.

Startled from sleep, she was momentarily disoriented.

Then she remembered—it was one in the morning here, which meant it was past seven in the morning in Country A, where Feng Tingshen and her daughter lived.

They usually had breakfast around this time.

Ever since her daughter had gone to live with her father, Rong Ci had made it a habit to call her around this hour every morning.

Because she worked long hours and went to bed early, she’d set this alarm just to make sure she never missed their call.

At first, her daughter had struggled to adjust to living abroad and often called her, missing her dearly.

But as time went on, the distance between them grew—not just in miles but in emotion.
Her daughter’s tone had gradually shifted from affectionate and longing to impatient and perfunctory.

The truth was, there hadn’t been any reason to keep that alarm for a long time.

She just couldn’t bring herself to delete it.

With a bitter smile, Rong Ci stared at her phone for a while, then finally turned off the alarm and went back to sleep.

Meanwhile, in Country A, Feng Tingshen and Feng Jingxin were nearly done with breakfast.

Though he knew Rong Ci usually called around this time, he wasn’t always home, and he’d never paid much attention to the routine.

He noticed she hadn’t called today, but it didn’t concern him—he finished breakfast and went upstairs to change.

As for Feng Jingxin, she found her mother’s daily calls increasingly annoying.

Seeing that Mom still hadn’t called this morning, she figured she must have been busy.

Her bright eyes flickered mischievously. Grabbing her backpack, she dashed out the door.

Aunt Liu hurried after her. “Miss, it’s still early! You can leave later!”

But Feng Jingxin ignored her, happily running toward the car.

She wasn’t about to miss this rare opportunity—if Mom didn’t call now and she lingered at home, Mom might call later, and she’d be stuck chatting again. She definitely didn’t want that!

After marriage, Rong Ci had joined the Feng Corporation.

Back then, she’d entered the company entirely for Feng Tingshen’s sake.

Now that she had decided to divorce him, there was no reason to stay any longer.

The next morning, after arriving at the office, she handed her resignation letter to Jiang Zhe.
