chapter 21
Assault (1)
Hyunwoong Clan Guild Headquarters.
The place had descended into utter chaos.
Clang! Clash!
âKill them all!â
âHold the line! Donât let them break through!â
âArghhh!â
âJunsu! Damn it, no!â
The sound of blades crashing and screams filled the air everywhere.
And thenâthe finishing touch.
KWAANGââ!!
âTheyâre insane! They even brought a mage!?â
âThe wallâs down! Go! Wipe out those Hyunwoong bastards!â
âUwaaaaahhhhââ!!â
A mage.
A high-class combatant among hunters.
Unlike physical-type hunters, who could get stronger simply by recklessly diving into dungeons after awakening, becoming a mage required rigorous training in controlling mana and learning magical theory at the Magic Tower.
And somehow, Ironclad Clan had brought along not just any mage, but one who seemed quite powerful.
The results spoke for themselves.
Thanks to the mageâs firepower, the attackers were now pouring in through a breached flank instead of the heavily fortified main entrance.
Without a mage, it would have been impossible.
âPush through! Push through!â
âToday, we end the Hyunwoong Clan!â
The Ironclad hunters charged toward the gaping hole in the headquartersâ outer wall.
And thenâ
âArgh!â
âGuhhh!â
Wham! Bam!
Crash!
They were sent flying back.
Behind them stood a bearded man wielding a long spearâ
Guildmaster of the Hyunwoong Clan and a 4-star hunter, Ji Hyunwoong.
âHow dare you bastards storm in here!â
His booming voice, laced with mana, was enough to overwhelm their spirits.
âTh-thatâs Ji Hyunwoong!â
âDamn itâŚ!â
The Ironclad hunters faltered, backing away.
Taking down a 4-star hunter required at least several 3-star hunters working together.
The 1- and 2-stars who had rushed forward first didnât stand a chance.
But thenâ
âFireball.â
BOOMââ!
A fireball the size of a human head exploded against Ji Hyunwoong.
He deflected it with his spear shaft, but he couldnât completely avoid the shockwave.
âCough! Damn mageâŚâ
âWhy donât you surrender now? Itâs the only way to lessen your losses.â
Through the crowd, a middle-aged woman appeared.
She wore mageâs robes and carried a short wooden wand.
âWhy are you helping the Ironclad Clan? You gain nothing from getting involved in this.â
âWell⌠first of all, because heâs family.â
She shrugged helplessly.
âAnd I do owe my younger brother for paying the astronomical tuition fees of the Magic Tower.â
âHaâŚâ
Ji Hyunwoong let out a bitter sigh.
Family.
If it were anything else, maybe persuasion wouldâve worked. But familyâthere was no swaying her.
âThen Iâll have to take the mage down first if weâre to have any hopeâŚâ
But before he could move, a man stepped out past her.
A slicked-back man in sunglassesâhardly fitting for a battlefield.
âThanks, sis. Nice job.â
âOh? Look at you, talking like that to me now. Youâve grown, huh?â
âIâve always been taller than you.â
âHah!â
After bantering casually with the mage, he turned his gaze toward Ji Hyunwoong.
âOi, Ji Hyunwoong. Surrender.â
ââŚMa Gwangchul.â
The man was none other than Ironclad Clanâs guildmasterâMa Gwangchul.
With an air of arrogance, he began his threats.
âYou know you canât win. Why waste your life?â
ââŚ.â
Ji Hyunwoong gritted his teeth in silence.
âThe gap in power is too wide.â
Even just the mage was a problem. Her overwhelming long-range firepower under protection made the situation dire.
And from the blow he took earlier, her ability was at leastâ
â4-star, minimum.â
On par with him. Possibly stronger.
And then there was Ma Gwangchul, also a 4-star hunter, and one who had reached that rank long before Ji Hyunwoong.
âThis is hopeless.â
They were outnumbered and outmatched in every way.
Only one 4-star on their side versus two on the enemyâs.
Not enough 3-star team leaders either.
And their total headcount barely reached forty, against Ironcladâs hundred.
It was a disasterâmade worse because they had been ambushed, unable to rally all their members.
âOur only hope is⌠Deputy Kim Yujin.â
Kim Yujinâ
The young 4-star hunter who had recently signed a temporary contract with him, sharing the goal of crushing Ironclad.
He was strong. Perhaps even stronger than Ji Hyunwoong himself.
Ji Hyunwoong still remembered the raw power Yujin had displayed during the dungeon break.
All he had to do was hold out until Yujin arrived.
Tightening his grip on his spear, Ji Hyunwoong burned with determination.
âGo to hell.â
ââŚI donât get it. You seriously think you can win?â Ma Gwangchul tilted his head.
âThatâs your opinion.â
âDonât tell me youâre just throwing your men into the meat grinder? We donât want needless bloodshed either. Just surrender.â
ââŚ.â
Instead of answering, Ji Hyunwoong raised his spear threateningly.
He could not surrender.
âThis region must not fall into Ironcladâs hands.â
Areas under their influence were notorious hellholes.
Drugs, murder, rape, and crime ran rampant. Civilians who werenât part of Ironclad were treated like slaves.
Even safety from gate outbreaks wasnât guaranteed.
It was a common tragedy in these timesâgovernment forces barely managed Seoul, leaving local guilds to handle the provinces, for better or worse.
But Ji Hyunwoong⌠he hated it.
Even if it seemed idealistic, he wanted to build a better society.
Which meantâhe could never surrender.
âMe surrendering here would be your best-case scenario, wouldnât it?â
âOf courseââ
âBecause only then could you cover this up.â
ââŚ.â
Gwangchulâs face twisted slightly.
âJust as I thought.â
They had started this war with no justification.
The authorities might ignore local guild conflicts, but not the annihilation of one.
Losing an entire guild meant leaving gates in that region without response teams.
In other wordsâ
âIf weâre wiped out here, you wonât walk away clean either.â
Mutual destruction.
This was one of those times where the âif I die, you die tooâ strategy actually worked.
ââŚâ
Ma Gwangchul had no retort.
Finally, he muttered through clenched teeth:
âSon of a bitch. You catch on too fast.â
From the start, putting his mage sister forward had been to force a clean surrender, not drag out a bloody battle.
They had hoped to absorb Hyunwoong Clan quickly before anyone noticed.
But since that failedâ
âFine. Then weâll just kill you all and deal with the aftermath. Problem?â
âTry it.â
âManagement only cares if the gates are contained. They donât give a damn what else we do.â
Retreat was never in his plans.
It was by pushing further than anyone else that Ma Gwangchul had risen to where he stood.
âSis. Kill him.â
âEh. No thanks.â
ââŚWhat?â
âYou didnât say anything about me fighting a 4-star hunter.â
ââŚDamn it, sis.â
Losing face, Ma Gwangchul cursed under his breath.
He took off his sunglasses and stowed them in his subspace, drawing his twin daggers instead.
If the mage wouldnât fight, heâd have to handle Ji Hyunwoong himself.
Ji Hyunwoong swallowed hard.
âItâs lucky the mage isnât joiningâfor now. But if things turn bad, sheâll jump in anyway. This doesnât mean weâre safe.â
He silently prayed for Yujinâs arrival.
âPlease⌠get here soon.â
âDie, spearman!â
âYou first, twin-blade bastard!â
Their weapons clashed with a thunderous crash.
Clang! KAAANGââ!
âTotal mess.â
That was the first thing I said as I arrived at the scene as fast as possible.
The situation was clearly dire.
Hyunwoongâs hunters were barely holding the entrance.
The buildingâs outer walls were half-destroyed, as if bombarded.
And through a gaping hole, Ji Hyunwoong was locked in desperate battleâ
Against none other than Ma Gwangchul, guildmaster of the Ironclad Clan.
âThey really went all in, huh.â
Worse still, Ironclad had spare troopsâdozens waiting behind the front lines.
Thanks only to the defensive structure of the HQ, Hyunwoong had managed to hold for now. But it was only a matter of time before they broke.
I quickly scanned the battlefield.
âThat sideâs fine.â
Ji Hyunwoong was holding his own against Gwangchul.
So where I needed to be wasâ
âArghhh!â
âHold! Donât let them through!â
Our 3rd Team, who I had earlier dismissed, were desperately holding their ground.
âOvertime, huh? I canât allow that.â
Without hesitation, I sprinted toward the front where my team was fighting for their lives.
The battle was growing more frantic by the second.
âI-I canât hold much longerâŚ!â
âEndure! If you fall, we all die! Holdââ
âGuaahhh!â
âMaknae!!!â
I saw our youngest stabbed through the shield by an enemy blade.
âNowâs the chance! Push them!â
âYaaaahhh!â
Ironclad hunters surged in for the kill.
âNot so fast.â
I leapt high, mana surging through my legs, and dropped into their midst.
KWAANGââ!
The ground shook as I landed.
âWh-what!?â
âShit! Heâs dead!?â
The hunter I landed on was crushed, his skull shattered.
âDeputy Leader!â
âYou came to save us!â
âGood work, everyone. You too, maknae.â
They had fought bravely with insufficient numbers.
I hadnât known them long, but Iâd grown attached. Relief washed over me knowing they were alive.
âAnd honestly, I need them alive if Iâm going to crush Ironclad cleanlyâŚâ
But it wasnât just that.
There was a genuine sense of camaraderie nowâsomething I had never felt during my time in Ironclad.
âWhat the hell is he!?â
âItâs him! The porter bastard!â
Ironclad hunters shouted in alarm.
âMan, so much attention. I donât know what to do with myself.â
I smirked, turning toward them.
âWait, thatâs the guy who wrecked Team Leader YongâŚ?â
âIdiot. You believe that rumor? Total nonsense!â
âKill him! Heâs alone!â
âEveryone, charge!â
âUwoooooohhh!â
The battle reignited with fury.
âDeputy Leader, itâs dangerous!â
âGet inside the defenses!â
The Hyunwoong hunters shouted anxiously.
It made senseâI was standing outside the defensive perimeter, facing Ironclad alone.
The logical move was to fall back into safety.
Butâ
âNo need to worry.â
I was confident.
Utterly certain I didnât need such caution.
As three hunters rushed me from different angles, I calmly raised my blade.
âItâs time to test the results of my training.â
I swung the Frostblade lightly.
âDieee!â
Slashââ!
The head of the foremost Ironclad hunter separated cleanly from his body.
â End of Chapter 21 (Part 1).
