Chapter 12 â Trauma (1)
âItâs Anbin.â
ââŚâŚâ
âYour younger brother by a year, Kim Anbin. Thatâs right.â
Grandpa Kim Pyeongâs shocking statement.
For a moment, I was frozen in place.
I had thought, No way, no way⌠but it really was Kim Anbin.
âŚHah. Well, at least itâs nothing dangerous.
That alone was enough to ease my nerves.
I relaxed a bit and spoke reluctantly.
âThatâs him?â
âCome to think of it, you havenât seen him in quite a while, have you?â
True, I hadnât seen him in about three years.
But stillâcould a person really change that much in just three years?
He must weigh at least 150 kilos.
And not the muscular kind eitherâjust completely unmanaged obesity.
The Kim Anbin I remembered had never been that out of shape.
He wasnât anything impressive, but at least an average build.
Not that itâs any of my businessâŚ
I couldnât call Anbin a friend, even as a joke.
Still, having lived together for a few years, seeing this drastic transformation was⌠startling.
Then Grandpa Kim Pyeong suddenly lowered his voice and addressed me.
âYujin.â
âYes?â
âI have a favor to ask.â
Why did I have the perfectly clear feeling I already knew what he was about to say?
âIâm not doing it.â
I voiced my refusal outright, but Grandpa was persistent.
âCanât you find a way to straighten Anbin out? Heâs been holed up in his room, gaining weight, and his personalityâs turned roughâŚâ
As he spoke, he clasped my hand tightly.
âThatâs not going to work on me.â
I rejected him without hesitation.
I wasnât some kind of therapist. How on earth was I supposed to âfixâ that?
More than not wanting to do it, this was simply impossible from the start.
âIf you told him a bit about what youâve been through, maybe heâd feel something. Real hunter stories, you know. Iâm begging you, just this once.â
âIf that couldâve changed him, it wouldâve happened long ago.â
âHaa⌠At this rate, when I die, how will that poor boy survive on his ownâŚâ
Even after repeated refusals, Grandpa resorted to playing the sympathy card.
Still useless.
No was no.
ââŚHaa.â
Thenâ
âGrandpa.â
âMm?â
I let out a deep sigh and looked straight at him.
Iâd spent seven years right by his side.
If thereâs one thing I knew, itâs that this man wasnât the type to genuinely make such a request.
Granted, I hadnât seen him for about three yearsâŚ
But there was no way heâd completely changed in that time.
I spoke firmly.
âDrop the act.â
ââŚTch.â
He clicked his tongue.
Then his expression changed in an instant.
From pitiful and pleading to calm and calculatingâhis real self.
So it was all an act, just a ploy to get me to work for free.
Confirming that, I smirked.
âYour acting style hasnât changed. But it still doesnât work on me.â
âWhen an old man talks like this, arenât you supposed to at least pretend to agree?â
âPretend? Thatâs enough?â
ââŚForget it.â
Shaking his head, Grandpa switched tactics.
âJust talk to him once. In return, Iâll grant you one request, no questions asked. Deal?â
âNo labor fee?â
âRight.â
My request to meet Ji Hyun-woong carried a fee of one million won.
So he was essentially offering me one million won just to say a few words to Kim Anbin.
And on top of thatâ
âYouâll need some time before you can meet Hyun-woong anyway. Youâve got nothing else to do in the meantime, right?â
âThatâs true.â
Having no urgent business at the moment was part of it.
But more importantlyâ
If I play this right, I could pull in a solid chunk of capital.
Grandpa Kim Pyeong had money.
Understandable, given his⌠less-than-legal dealings.
If I handled things well, I could make quite a lot.
And Iâll need money to operate as a hunter anyway, so itâs not a bad idea.
I decided it was worth considering.
âAll right, letâs hear it first.â
Iâd listen, then decide on my terms.
Grandpa sighed once more and elaborated.
âSigh⌠That damn âawakening.â I think he went astray because he never awakened.â
ââŚAwakening?â
âYeah. Whenever I say anything, he just says heâll be fine once he awakens and doesnât listen. Lifeâs not something you can get by on luck alone.â
ââŚâŚâ
But something about that didnât sit right with me.
Heâs saying Anbinâs unawakened?
The Anbin I sensed didnât match the Anbin Grandpa was describing.
And in that momentâ
Got it.
A good idea struck me.
âGrandpa.â
âSpeak.â
âIf I awaken Anbin, how much will you pay me?â
ââŚ!â
He looked genuinely shocked.
âThat⌠Thatâs impossibleââ
âItâs possible.â
âIf you could do that, Iâd pay you⌠ten million wonââ
âGrandpa?â
ââŚThirty?â
âFifty.â
âYujin, you brat! I raised you!â
âFifty million for an awakening? Thatâs a steal!â
ââŚâŚâ
I grinned.
This was a fight I couldnât lose.
âYujin, I want to give it to you, but I donât have that much. If youâd just lower yourââ
âIâd love to be fooled, but letâs see⌠I already know youâve gotâŚâ
I listed off his stash of emergency funds.
His face twisted.
ââŚFine. Fifty.â
âPleasure doing business with you.â
âTch.â
Fifty million won secured.
âIs it good?â
ăMmm!!!!!ă
Frill nodded vigorously, wearing a blissful smile.
She was biting into an ice cream Iâd taken out of the fridge.
ăThis place has stuff like this? Is this heaven?ă
ââŚThat good, huh?â
Being an ice spirit, Iâd figured sheâd like ice cream.
But she liked it even more than Iâd expected.
ăI love it! Itâs so good!ă
She took another big bite.
After munching happily for a while, she held out her hand.
ăMore!ă
I flatly refused.
âNo.â
ăWhy!?ă
âBehave and Iâll give you more.â
ăHmph.ă
She pouted, but I ignored it.
You canât give in to every tantrum. You have to know when to say no.
Andâ
âItâs work time.â
I had things to do, and lounging around eating ice cream wasnât one of them.
That âworkâ was the Make It Look Like I Awakened Kim Anbin project.
Obviously, I didnât have some convenient ability to awaken people.
The guyâs already awakened.
Anbin was already a hunter.
Grandpa just didnât know.
Heâll probably be mad later when he finds out.
Not my problem.
Shouldâve checked before making the deal.
Heâs the one who taught me that a sucker contract is the suckerâs fault.
Anywayâ
âHow should I handle thisâŚâ
Strictly speaking, I didnât have to do anything.
I could just say, Actually, heâs already awakened. Ta-da! and be done.
Butâ
âThat would be a bit too shameless.â
Since I was getting paid, I might as well figure out what was wrong with him and fix it.
Besidesâ
âGood chance to leave Grandpa with someone useful.â
If I turned Anbin into a functional hunter, Grandpa would have someone capable by his side.
In a world where monsters could appear any time and other hunters might cause trouble, having your grandson as a hunter was a big advantage.
So in a way, itâd be repaying Grandpa.
Also, itâs fifty million won.
With that in mindâ
I flung open the door to Anbinâs room.
Bang!
âAnbin! Your big brotherâs here!â
âW-what the hell!?â
The bulky figure glued to his online community scrambled in panic when he saw me.
âGet out!â
âYouâve gotten pretty snappy since I last saw you.â
âKim Yujin!â
âAnd ruder, too.â
âYouâŚ!â
He glared hard at me, but I wasnât even remotely intimidated.
Iâd survived daily harassment from hunters who cut down monsters for a living.
The glare of a shut-in was childâs play.
âSo, what were you looking at?â
I glanced at the online forum heâd been staring at.
âDonât look!â
He tried desperately to block the monitor, but I caught a glimpse.
<Why Life Sucks Without Awakening.txt (4)>
-
If an eruption goes off in front of you, youâre dead. Am I right?
â lol true
â haha no way to survive
â damn I wish Iâd awaken!
âHm.â
Looked like a community where unawakened folks shared their misery.
A thought crossed my mind.
Could it be⌠he doesnât know heâs awakened?
Butâ
No way.
Itâs impossible not to feel the mana in your own body, and awakening lets you see the System.
No way he wouldnât notice.
Which means thereâs only one explanationâŚ
I tested my theory.
âDo you want to awaken?â
ââŚWhy do you care? Just get lost!â
âYou think things would change if you did?â
ââŚObviously! Iâm only like this because I havenât awakened yet. Once I doââ
âOnce you do?â
ââŚTch. Why should I tell you? Just get out of my life!â
There were small pauses before his answers.
There could be many reasons, but I knew this oneâ
Awakening denial syndrome.
Probably the most accurate description of his condition.
Not uncommon.
Some people, when faced with the reality of having to fight monsters, reject the fact that theyâve awakened at all.
Come to think of it⌠his parents were killed by monsters, werenât they?
Most cases stemmed from trauma.
That would explain him hiding his awakening.
Then he shoved me.
Thud!
âScrew you! Iâm not taking advice from a porter who awakened and still does grunt work!â
âŚOkay, I take back my understanding.
I may have gotten over it now, but that used to be my trauma.
All right. Shock therapy it is.
Not because Iâm mad.
Definitely not.
âHey.â
âWhat!â
âYouâve awakened.â
ââŚH-how do you know that!? What do you know!?â
He flinched, stammering.
Didnât expect to be found out, huh?
âMana. If you donât keep it contained, everyone can feel it.â
ââŚShit.â
Grandpa couldnât sense it since heâs unawakened, but any hunter could.
Anbin wasnât even trying to hide it.
And heâs not just a 1-star either.
His mana was at a 2-star level.
A fresh awakening with 2-star mana?
Heâd be treated very well.
Though with that body, maybe notâŚ
That could be fixed with some training.
If he wanted to, that is.
ââŚYou donât get it.â
âWhat donât I get?â
âFight monsters? I canât! I canât do it!â
His words got harsher, but beneath them was a faint trace of fear.
Tch.
I clicked my tongue inwardly.
This isnât something thatâll be fixed with normal conversation.
Itâd take something drastic.
How toâŚ
Just thenâ
âKyaaaaaaah!â
A scream from outside.
Andâ
Keek, kik!
High-pitched cackles.
Goblins?
Sounded like an eruption gate had opened.
And thenâan idea.
âAnbin.â
âWhat!â
âLetâs go out.â
âWhat? Noâahhh!â
I grabbed him by the back of the neck.
âSorry, but you donât have a choice.â
And jumped straight out the window.
