Chapter 08
âHow⊠how could you do this, Your Highness? You already have someone youâre seeing, yet you came to this arranged meeting?â
The man sitting across from her pointed at the ring box. His fingertips were shaking violently.
âThis is an insult to me and my familyâs company. Apologize!â
At his bold demand, Yeon rubbed her forehead.
He wasnât entirely wrong.
But this wasnât something she needed to apologize for.
It was Crown Prince Byeong who had arranged this meeting without her consent,
so if anyone should apologize, it should be him.
Still, Yeon didnât want to make a big scene.
But she also didnât feel like apologizing⊠so what now?
While she was still thinking, Seo-jun opened his mouth.
âYouâre the one who should be apologizing.â
He placed his phone on the table.
Naturally, all three sets of eyes turned toward the small screen.
A video was playing.
In it, the man from the meeting was clearly visibleâ
leaning his big belly toward some woman and making her uncomfortable.
âHarassing your secretary,â Seo-jun explained.
He swiped the screen.
Next appeared a screenshot of a bank account.
âMoney laundering.â
Another swipeâthis time, documents appeared.
They were complicated to read, so Seo-jun kindly explained.
âAnd military supply corruption. Playing around with soldiersâ food is low.
Passing off Chinese products as local-made⊠you really crossed the line.
Do you want to keep watching?â
âWh-what is this?â
âProof you can never become my father-in-law,â Seo-jun said coldly.
âYou dare to come meet Her Highness with a life this filthy?â
âI-I didnât do it! This is a misunderstandingââ
âThen explain it during the investigation. Or⊠should I give you a friendly âpre-interviewâ first?â
Seo-jun smirked.
The man knew about Seo-junâs history as a police officerâ
through a friend who had once been completely ruined by him.
The memory made his spine go cold.
âF-fine. Letâs pretend today never happened.â
âAnd the apology?â Seo-jun pointed at Yeon.
The look in his eyes was fierce, like heâd grab the man by the collar if he didnât apologize right away.
The man hesitated, then quickly bowed his head.
âIâm sorry, Your Highness.â
Seo-jun glanced at Yeon, as if to say Your turn to finish this.
Yeon didnât mindâit was exactly what she wanted.
âLetâs just agree the meeting didnât work out. And letâs not bring it up again, now or in the future.â
The man clearly understood she meant for him to report this politely to the Crown Prince.
âYes, Iâll tell His Highness that we just werenât compatible.â
âGood answer.â
It was obvious from the short conversation that they had completely different values.
Marrying a man like this? Sheâd rather jump into a burning fire.
âThenâŠâ
The man seemed ready to leave, but kept glancing at Seo-jun.
âDo you have something else to say?â
âTh-those photos and videosâŠâ
He couldnât bring himself to actually say âdelete them,â and just kept sweating.
âYou mean your corruption evidence? Your choiceâ
Do you want it quietly investigated and only the bare minimum leaked to the press in a week,
or do you want it on the front page right now?â
Clearly, Seo-jun wasnât planning to let him off.
The man studied his face for a long moment, trying to decide if he was serious.
Then he bowed his head.
âIâll take the investigation.â
âI thought so. Prosecutor Kim is waiting in the underground parking lot.â
The manâs jaw dropped.
Even Yeonâs eyes widened.
How far ahead had Seo-jun planned this?
âGo on,â Seo-jun said firmly.
Like a defeated soldier, the man slumped his shoulders and dragged his feet out.
Once he was gone, Seo-jun stood up.
âWhere are you going?â Yeon asked.
âWeâre finally alone. Iâm moving over there.â
He pointed to the seat across from her, pulled out the manâs chair, and sat down.
Yeon glanced at the empty space beside her, then looked at him.
âWhatâs this?â she asked, nudging the box in front of her.
It slid easily across the table.
âIs it empty?â
âThatâs what youâre most curious about?â
It wasnât really curiosityâit was just ridiculous.
Heâd shown up without warning, acted like her boyfriend, and now⊠an empty box?
If this was the plan, a heads-up wouldâve been nice.
âThatâs not it,â Seo-jun said.
Still, she was grateful he had gotten rid of her meeting partner, so she bit back any complaint.
âThen listen to me first.â
Seo-jun rested his arms on the table.
Yeonâs ears perked upâshe was very curious what he would say.
She felt a little excitement.
Earlier the mood was good⊠even if he was a bit cheesy.
Maybe he had come to give a good answer to her proposal.
But instead, he said:
âYou told me to take my time, then you go on a blind date?â
Her smile vanished instantly.
The memory of the last three daysâdealing with Byeongâs harassment while waiting for himârose in her chest like a heavy lump.
âI couldnât just wait forever,â she said.
âYou told me I was the only one, but was that a lie? Youâd marry anyone?â
Her eyes trembled.
Sheâd meant every word sheâd told him.
And now he was twisting itâshe hated that.
âAre you angry? What did I do wrong? I only asked for timeâI never said how long. Should I just sit around waiting?â
She knew it wasnât exactly fair to be mad at him, but her words kept pouring out.
âAnd why is this such a big deal? I told you marriage was urgent.
Of course I might go on blind dates! Why are you acting like this? Donât tell me⊠youâre jealous?â
The more she spoke, the faster she went, until she was breathless.
She grabbed her iced Americano and gulped it down.
âYes. Iâm jealous.â
âPfftââ
She almost choked to death right then and there.
If people died from iced coffee, sheâd be in the Guinness World Records.
She coughed violently, covering her mouth.
Her attendant, Silan, started toward her, but Yeon shook her head.
Seo-jun handed her a handkerchief.
Finally able to breathe, she took it and wiped her mouth and eyes.
Her face was burningâwhether from coughing or from him, she couldnât tell.
âBetter?â he asked.
She nodded.
âThen Iâll keep going. Iâll admit itâwhen I saw your text, I got angry.
I didnât like the idea of you going on a blind date.
There are many reasons, but if I have to choose one⊠itâs jealousy.â
His straightforward confession made her feel oddly embarrassed.
âYou couldâve just told me not to go.â
âAnd if I had, would you have stayed home? Noâyou didnât want to go in the first place.â
Her eyes shook.
She hadnât told him the details, yet he knew.
He knew sheâd been forced to come, and that it had hurt her.
âThen you shouldâve come sooner. At least called me.â
His voice softened.
Seo-jun realized heâd been too emotional.
âI couldnât show up empty-handed. I needed to prepare.â
âYou mean the video and photos from earlier?â
He nodded and explained.
When he got her text, he was in a morning meeting for a government audit.
He immediately stopped the meeting and shut himself in his office,
ordering his informants to dig up everything on her blind date partner.
Normally it took a day to get basic dirt on someoneâ
but finding deep weaknesses took at least a week.
Heâd done it in four hours thanks to his skills and contactsâŠ
and because the man was already a walking disaster.
âI didnât even have time to send a text,â he said.
Yeon could believe itâhe must have been incredibly busy.
âFinding that evidence was lucky. But tell me, Kang Seo-junâ
If you hadnât found anything, were you not going to come?â
Her question caught him completely off guard.
