Chapter 83

Jang Hyunji flew quickly. She didn’t even know how it was possible. She could only enter this world through Florence’s body, but now a part of her soul could leave it. She believed the world was granting her desperate wish.

This world was on Jang Hyunji’s side. She was the main character here. She decided to live in this world and grabbed the opportunity God had prepared for her.

“There’s no way Linus won’t love me.”

No matter how she looked, he would recognize her, find her, and love her. That was their promise. Their love was real.

“Linus!”

She flew toward the house where they had spent their honeymoon, the beautiful Lindquist mansion where they once whispered love to each other.

“Linus, it’s me. I’m here…!”

Her strong and beautiful man—the best man in the world—desired her more than anything else.

Their love had been beautiful from the start. After Florence ruined their relationship, Jang Hyunji carefully planned everything to show who she really was.

Just like how the members of House Seymour accepted her changed self, she believed Linus would also accept her.

It didn’t take much: a changed attitude, way of speaking, a new look in the eyes. These small things made the people of House Seymour deeply love “Florence.” It was nothing short of a miracle. Everything was destined for her. Linus would be no different.

“Who are you?”
“I’m Florence. Florence Love Seymour, your fiancée.”

She smiled sweetly, her voice as soft as candy. She allowed Linus’s sharp gaze to examine her completely.

“Look at me. See me. I’m different from that girl. You can’t help but love me. I’m pretty, strong, and I can give you everything you want. Most of all, I’m special….”

“There’s no woman in the world who suits you better than me, Linus.”

As she expected, Linus loved her. His love was obsessive and intense, just like in the novel. He tied her so tightly that she couldn’t even breathe. He couldn’t stand it if her eyes wandered for even a moment.

“Only I can breathe your air.”
“Your eyes must always look at me.”
“I’m the only one who can have you, Florence.”

The more Linus obsessed over her, the happier Jang Hyunji felt. The world’s most perfect man wanted her so desperately.

This was the life she truly deserved.

“That worthless life was never mine from the beginning.”

She believed she and Florence had been destined to switch lives from the start. That explained why she had been so unhappy.

Jang Hyunji’s life had been miserable from birth.

Her mother hid in the kitchen drinking soju every day. Her father, who did who-knows-what outside, yelled and hit his wife and daughter as soon as he came home. Their old, cold house inherited from her grandparents was a mess.

As she grew up, she realized more and more that she was trapped in a miserable family.

The friend who sat next to her in class always wore clean, neatly ironed clothes and smelled of nice shampoo. That friend would talk about going out with her parents on weekends or complain about not having enough allowance. She didn’t even study as well as Jang Hyunji, but she looked so much happier.

Why is her life so different from mine?

Jang Hyunji was a good student. The only way to escape her hellish home was through studying. She told herself that when she grew up, she would leave the house, cut all ties, and succeed on her own.

Even though she got angry seeing her friend easily improve with private tutors and academy lessons, she held it in.

“My life will be different. When I become an adult, everything will change.”

But reality was cruel.

Her mother still drank, and her father still beat her. That night, her mother screamed like an animal, louder than ever before.

Jang Hyunji locked her door and covered her ears, but she couldn’t stand it and ran out—only to witness a horrifying scene.

Her father’s fists were bloody, and her mother lay motionless on the floor.

She couldn’t remember much after that. There was a fire. It was winter, and their old house had many hazards. Her parents couldn’t escape the flames, but Jang Hyunji ran out barefoot and was rescued.

She suffered burns all over her body. The face that had once been decent enough was now scarred and twisted.

But for a short moment, Jang Hyunji felt happy. She found out her mother had fire and life insurance. She needed surgery, but at least she wouldn’t be short on money anymore.

“Now I can start a new life.”

Excited, she focused on her treatment.

But as her burn treatments were nearly finished, she was diagnosed as terminally ill.

“This crappy life! My damn life!”

Why was her luck so terrible? Why did she face misfortune that others never did? She had just started to believe she could be happy. Why her? Why?

Treatment was painful and useless—she didn’t have long to live anyway. She also started having phantom pains at night.

She dreamed of her mother, crawling through the fire, grabbing her ankles and dragging her back into the flames.

“It was you, Hyunji! You did this!”
“Let me go!”
“How could you do this to us…?”

She kept telling herself she couldn’t remember anything.

Someone worried about her depression and recommended some books. At first, she thought it was stupid.

“I’m about to die. Do you think I can laugh by reading this?”

People could never truly understand someone else’s misfortune. Nobody knew how miserable and sad she really was.

But after much insistence, she flipped through the pages.

In the books, the main character’s life was perfect. Everything in the world was prepared for them.

It made her furious.

“Why wasn’t a life like that prepared for me? Why do I have to die after suffering so much?”

And then she realized:

“It’s because I was Florence all along.”

“Linus!”

Linus was sitting by the bedroom window. He had once told her he couldn’t sleep without her. Even now, he was barely holding himself together. Tears almost filled Jang Hyunji’s eyes.

“Linus, I’m here…”

Her beautiful Linus.

She missed his warmth, his scent, and his gaze so much.

“Hyunji?”

Linus suddenly raised his head.

“Linus! Yes! You recognized me, my love!”

Jang Hyunji smiled brightly. She knew it—the silly spirit user’s words had been nonsense. They didn’t know how deep and beautiful their love was.

She reached out beyond the glass, wanting to touch him.

Linus looked directly toward where she was. He seemed to feel her presence. With his sharp senses, he could see things ordinary people couldn’t—like the faint figure of his wife beyond the window.

The obsidian eyes she loved so much.

“Linus, I’ve been through so much… Hug me like always.”

“Pull me into this world with your obsession that couldn’t stand even a moment of my gaze drifting away.”

But then she saw something new in his black eyes: suspicion, caution, and faint disgust.

“Hyunji…?”

That was the last thing she saw before being pulled back through Florence’s body.
