Chapter 9

Apocalypse Summoning Book (2)

The night I returned from clearing the Rune Dungeon, I couldn’t sleep from the excitement.

Five years I had waited for this special reward.
Awakening.
Reunion with Hertia.
A class of the Apocalypse tier.

All of it had happened within just a few days.

Naturally, it sparked a lot of questions in me—
And one of them was about the Apocalypse Summoning Book that had summoned Hertia.

Come to think of it, it was strange.
Normally, summoning a familiar required a “Summoning Ticket” or “Choice Ticket,” not some sort of “Book.”

Even after summoning Hertia, the book hadn’t disappeared.
I could summon it back into my hand anytime I wanted.

So, I decided to take a closer look.

Here’s what I found:

  1. Through the Apocalypse Summoning Book, I can summon “Villains”—the legacy of Lucifer.

    [Current inherited legacies]
    ▶ 1/7

  2. Summoning a Villain requires “points.”

[Points required for next legacy inheritance]
    ▶ 0 / 1,000 pt

  3. Points are obtained by sacrificing Summoning Tickets.
The number of points gained depends on the ticket’s grade.

    • Common: 1 pt

    • Advanced: 5 pt

    • Mythic: 1,000 pt

Alright, let’s crunch the numbers.

I needed 1,000 points to fill the sacrifice requirement.

That meant, using the cheapest option—Common tickets—I’d need 1,000 of them.

If I bought them from the marketplace at 20,000 won each… that was 20 million won total.

Getting a familiar stronger than Mythic for just 20 million won?
That was basically free.

Of course, the next summon would almost certainly require way more points.

Not that I even have 20 million won right now.

The profit I made from selling my Hero-grade Choice Ticket had all been given to my family.

Sure, if I asked for just 20 million for urgent use, they’d give it back in a heartbeat, but… that would be embarrassing.
And there was no need anyway.

The loot I’d gotten from grinding the Attribute Rune Dungeon yesterday was enough.

[Current Summoning Ticket Inventory]

  • Common-grade Summoning Tickets ×305

  • Advanced-grade Summoning Tickets ×111

  • Rare-grade Summoning Tickets ×20

I did the math by converting them to points by grade.

305 Commons = 305 pts, plus 111 Advanced = 555 pts, plus 14 Rare = 140 pts… total 1,060 pts.

I could summon a new Villain and still have six Rare tickets left over.

I was humming without realizing it.

Alright, guess I’ll head up the hill behind my house and give this a try.

The hill out back had no trail, was steep, and almost no one went there.
And right now, it was the dead of night.
Perfect for doing something in secret.

If my family saw me, they’d worry themselves sick about me taking a “midnight stroll in such dangerous times,” so I quietly got up and slipped out.

It was properly autumn now, the air brisk and chilly.
But my body was radiating an odd, feverish heat—
Guess I was subconsciously excited to see what kind of creature I’d summon next.

Once I reached a secluded spot, I placed the Apocalypse Summoning Book on my hand.

Thunk!

Still heavy.
Hard to tell if it was a book or a dumbbell.

Feeling the full weight of its cover, I carefully opened it.

《Do you wish to offer sacrifices to the Apocalypse Summoning Book?》

YES. YES. YES.

I immediately began feeding it my tickets.

《305 Common-grade Summoning Tickets sacrificed → 305 pts gained.》
《111 Advanced-grade Summoning Tickets sacrificed → 555 pts gained.》
《14 Rare-grade Summoning Tickets sacrificed → 140 pts gained.》

Once the tickets were all offered—

《Apocalypse Summoning Book sacrifice points fully charged.》

The book began glowing a deep, black-purple.

From within the shimmering light emerged something similar to the ticket I had first received.

《Apocalypse Summoning Ticket acquired.》

[Apocalypse Summoning Ticket]
Description: A ticket left behind by the “Rebel of the Morning Star.” Use it to randomly inherit one of the Rebel’s remaining legacies.

Random, huh?

When I summoned Hertia, I’d been able to choose exactly who I wanted.
That’s because it was a “Choice Ticket” back then.

This time was different.
It would randomly pick from the remaining six Villains.

With Hertia already in my roster, it doesn’t matter too much who I get… but still…

I checked the legacy list.

[Legacy List]

  • Siren of the White Valley, Ruinbringer (Dark)

  • Priestess Who Defied Heaven, Marena (Light)

  • Liberator of Death, Caligo (Dark)

  • Lord of the Skies, Ariel (Light)

  • Black Prince Theo (Dark)

  • Lion of Purity, Luchevar (Light)

Honestly, I’d be happy with any of them.
Some were great for long fights, some for speed, some perfectly balanced.

But there was just one… that I didn’t want right now.

…I’d prefer if Caligo didn’t show up just yet.

Not because he was weak—far from it.
But persuading him would probably require literally putting my life on the line.

…Hah, as if!

The odds were one in six. There’s no way I’d be that unlucky.

I focused, tore the ticket in my hand, and began the summoning.

Tear—!

《Inheriting one of the legacies left by the Rebel of the Morning Star…》

The air immediately turned cold.

Even my feverish body felt a chill.
But that wasn’t the problem.

From the ground up, a dark jade mist began to spread.
It quickly swallowed the area.

I knew this visual effect far too well.

…No way. Seriously?

The mist rose in a single tall pillar, then dispersed—
Revealing a tall, sharp-shouldered, gaunt man with crimson hair.

You’ve got to be kidding me…

It was Caligo, the Liberator of Death.

And so begins the chaos.

PLot

It’s been five years since the game took over the world.
I awakened late, but I have no complaints.
Thanks to the “All Clear” achievement that only I managed to accomplish, I gained an incredibly powerful special reward.

《Summoning the Witch of the Apocalypse, Hertia!》

"This room is worse than a doghouse. It’s unfit to be the residence of a great being."

…Well, except for the fact that this reward is the embodiment of all my dark past.
