“전 사실 동규가 민준이를 옥상 아래로 미는 걸 봤습니다.”
“Actually, I saw Dong-gyu push Min-jun off the rooftop.”
진우가 던진 한마디에 법정은 한순간 소용돌이치기 시작했다.
Jin-woo’s words sent the courtroom into a whirlwind of shock.
“증인. 정말 중요한 문제니까 정확하게 이야기해야 합니다. 정말 저기 있는 피고인이 피해자를 옥상 밖으로 밀었다는 건가요?”
“Witness, this is very important. Are you saying the defendant really pushed the victim off the rooftop?”
검사조차 예상치 못한 진우의 증언에 몇 번이고 사실을 확인했다.

진우가 깊게 숨을 들이마시고 천천히 입을 열었다.

“동규가 휘두른 쇠파이프에 머리를 맞고 민준이가 심하게 비틀거렸는데요. 그때 동규가 갑자기 달려들어 민준이를 옥상 밖으로 그냥 밀어버렸어요.”
“Min-jun staggered after being hit on the head by the metal pipe Dong-gyu swung. Then Dong-gyu suddenly ran and pushed him off the rooftop.”
방청석의 동규 엄마가 장탄식을 터트리며 가슴을 부여잡고 괴로워했다.

그는 아무 말도 나오지 않았다.

“증인! 지금 증인 위증하고 있는 거 아닙니까? 경찰 조사에서는 피해자가 옥상 밖으로 떨어진 건 실수라고 했는데. 왜 이제 와서 진술을 바꾸는 겁니까!”

“진짜 동규가 밀었으니까요.”
“Because Dong-gyu really did push him.”
진우의 말에 변호인이 놀라 눈을 크게 뜨고 판사에게 요청했다.
The defense attorney, shocked, asked the judge to disregard the testimony due to inconsistency.
“잘 알고 있습니다. 그래서 진실을 이야기하는 겁니다.”
“I know what perjury is. That’s why I’m telling the truth.”
진우는 눈물 글썽이며 확신에 차서 말했다.
Jin-woo’s eyes welled up with tears, but his voice was firm.
“민준이가 동규를 평소에 너무 많이 괴롭혔고 또 동규가 큰 벌을 받을까 걱정돼서….”
“Min-jun used to bully Dong-gyu a lot, and we were worried he’d get into big trouble…”
“저희도 진짜 피해자예요.”
“We were victims too. We only went along because Min-jun forced us.”
진우가 외쳤다.
Jin-woo shouted from the witness stand:
“야, 맞잖아. 너희들도 이야기 좀 해봐.”
“Yes, that’s right. You all tell it too!”
아이들은 떨리는 목소리로 동의했다.
The other kids nervously agreed:
“맞아요. 저희도 진짜 하기 싫었어요.”
“Yes. We really didn’t want to do it.”
“동규가 민준이를 밀었다는 건 확실해요.”
“But it’s certain Dong-gyu pushed Min-jun.”
동규의 눈에 눈물이 맺히기 시작했다.
Tears began to well in Dong-gyu’s eyes.
꽉 쥔 손은 손톱 때문에 손바닥에서 피가 날 정도였다.
His fists were so tight they drew blood.
참을 수 없는 분노와 배신감이 온몸을 휘감았다.

동규는 방청석으로 시선을 돌려 애끓는 얼굴로 자신을 바라보는 엄마를 불렀다.
He looked at his mother in the gallery, her face full of worry, and called her softly.
“죽여버릴 거야. 다 똑같이 죽여버릴 거야.”
“I’ll kill them all. All of them, the same way.”
진우가 웃으며 판사에게 소리쳤다.
Jin-woo, suppressing laughter at the absurdity, shouted to the judge:
“저희들이 위증해 주면 아무도 안 다친다고 했어요. 사실 위증도 다 동규가 시킨 거예요.”
“He told us to lie so no one would get hurt. The perjury… it was all Dong-gyu’s idea.”
동규는 과호흡으로 바닥에 쓰러졌다.
Dong-gyu collapsed, gasping for air.
인혜와 채린이 급히 달려가 그를 안정시키려 했다.
In-hye and Chaer-in rushed to help him breathe and calm down.
“두 사람은 어떻게 생각해요? 진짜 이 아이가 범인이라고 생각해요?”
“What do you think? Do you really believe this kid is guilty?”
“아니요.”
“No.”
채린의 한마디에 최 반장의 미간이 풀렸다.
Chaer-in’s single word eased Chief Choi’s tense expression.
“자, 이제 그날의 아침으로 돌아갔어요. 아무 일도 없는 아주 평온한 아침이에요.”

동규의 감은 눈꺼풀이 빠르게 떨리기 시작했다.
Dong-gyu’s eyelids fluttered rapidly—a sign he was fully entering the memory under hypnosis.
“아무도 당신을 힘들게 하지 못해요. 편안하게 있어요.”
“No one can hurt you. Relax. Let go of fear and worry.”
