Chapter 93
Emily’s body had recovered enough to ride in a carriage.
The Sinopé staff were perfectly prepared to welcome her and were waiting.
“Why did he come here?”
“Shh, Arthur. The Marquis might hear you.”
The look on their faces when they saw Killian return to the Sinopé mansion with her was anything but warm. The maid and butler, in particular, were the most severe.
“I understand you sent the divorce papers, but what brings His Excellency here?”
The butler blocked Killian’s path with a sharp tone.
At first, these people had feared Killian, thinking he was part of the mafia. But when it came to anything involving Miss Emily, they were boldly indifferent to who it was.
“Where are the divorce papers?”
Killian asked, and the butler, with a stiff expression, took the papers from his pocket.
“Give them here.”
Before anyone could stop him, Killian grabbed the papers from the butler’s hand and tore them apart.
Everyone present looked on in shock at the scraps of paper falling to the floor.
“Now, let’s all forget this trash.”
The servants glanced at Emily. She was standing with a satisfied smile, linking arms with Killian.
Indeed, the couple’s atmosphere seemed even sweeter than before.
‘What, was it just a simple marital quarrel?’
‘Still, sending a divorce paper just because of a fight? That’s unforgivable!’
The servants exchanged quick glances of concern.
But what could they do? It was obvious that the two of them were completely in love with each other.
“Hmm hmm.”
The nanny, still displeased, stepped in front of them and spoke.
“So, you two will be sharing a room, right?”
“What?”
Emily looked at the nanny in surprise.
“Grandma Juliette told me to prepare a room for both of you together.”
Emily pressed her forehead. As expected, the old lady wouldn’t let this pass quietly.
“I was just going to—”
Emily started to suggest preparing separate rooms, but Killian interrupted.
“Right. Prepare it that way.”
When Emily looked at him in surprise, Killian leaned in with a sweet smile and whispered,
“To treat you, I need to be there, don’t I?”
“I’ve managed fine without your treatments until now.”
“You refused the carrot soup, and yet you’ll keep being stubborn?”
Emily rolled her eyes at Killian’s changed attitude.
“You’re the one who doesn’t know what to do when we’re alone together.”
“Yes, that’s why I need practice.”
As the two whispered to each other, building their private world, the servants quietly left one by one.
After all, worrying about someone else’s romance was the most pointless thing in the world.
“Killian! You’re here!”
From a distance, Ivan came running with heavy steps.
He had rushed out of the basement upon hearing that Emily and Killian had arrived.
Seeing Ivan’s face reminded Killian that Kaeron was still locked in the mansion’s underground prison.
“Ma’am!”
Ivan spotted Emily behind Killian and, overwhelmed with emotion, even shed tears.
“I’m so glad you’re well, Ma’am! Hic! Ever since that day, I couldn’t sleep or eat, constantly worrying. If you hadn’t returned, I would’ve… I would’ve followed you to death myself…”
“That’s enough.”
Killian’s expression turned serious as he pushed Ivan’s forehead back.
“Thank you for worrying, Ivan.”
Emily greeted him gently. Her smile seemed to slowly lift the weight of guilt that had been pressing down on him.
“Sniff… Ma’am, you really must be an angel sent from heaven.”
The couple looked at Ivan with slightly alarmed eyes.
“…Please, go ahead upstairs first.”
Killian gestured to Emily.
“Yes, I’ll go first then.”
After confirming she had gone up, Killian tapped Ivan on the shoulder.
“Let’s go to Kaeron.”
“U-uh, yes?”
Only then did Ivan wipe his tears and look around. Emily was gone.
“Yes.”
He forced himself to compose, then led Killian to the underground prison.
Because the Sinopé mansion had always been warm and generous, there had been no need for a basement prison. Consequently, the underground area was poorly maintained.
The thick dust and musty smell made Killian frown. It reminded him of his miserable childhood.
“Hey! Get up!”
Ivan kicked the iron bars of the cell.
The man inside raised his head with difficulty.
Had Ivan not told him it was Kaeron, Killian might have struggled to recognize him. His face was swollen from the beatings.
“Now that Ma’am has been found, what should we do with him?”
Kaeron collapsed back to the floor upon hearing Ivan’s words.
“Damn, failed again?”
He muttered curses and then suddenly began laughing. The sound was so eerily grotesque that Killian and Ivan instinctively frowned.
Thunk thunk.
“What is it?”
Killian noticed something strange first.
“Open the door quickly!”
“Yes!”
Ivan hurriedly pulled the key from his pocket and opened the door.
As Killian pushed past him into the cell, blood was already gushing from Kaeron’s mouth.
Following him in, Ivan checked Kaeron’s mouth with a composed but shocked expression.
“…He bit his own tongue to commit suicide.”
It was a bit inconvenient that he had died, but he was no longer a necessary hostage.
The Giuliano family wasn’t the kind of mafia to risk exposure over just one capo.
“Deliver this to the Giuliano family.”
“Yes, understood!”
Still, seeing this, Killian thought he might at least make them a little regretful.
Now Killian had to head to the capital. Messina had been nagging him relentlessly about when he would come.
“Are you sure you’ll be okay alone without me?”
Emily’s voice was filled with concern, making Killian chuckle.
“Are you sure you can manage without me?”
Emily raised her eyes at him, playful but serious.
“Why are you suddenly being so cheeky?”
“Is this cheeky?”
Killian kept a smiling face as he toyed with her hand.
Since their hearts had connected, Killian clung to Emily constantly, using treatment as an excuse whenever she tried to push him away.
So it was hard for him to leave now.
“Will you be fighting the Giuliano organization when you get there?”
He had dared to kidnap the wife of another mafia boss. Now, even the Committee couldn’t restrain him.
“Don’t worry about that. Just stay put.”
Though he said he would explain soon, Killian still hadn’t gone into details about the rebellion plan.
Seeing Emily’s pouting face, Killian slightly bent down and lightly kissed her lips.
Emily, stunned, soon blushed and punched his chest.
“What are you doing out here? What if someone saw?”
“No one saw.”
He shrugged casually.
Emily was speechless. Compared to the Killian she knew, this version was unfamiliar.
“Your Excellency! Let’s depart now!”
Ivan’s shout from afar startled Emily, and she drew back. Killian quietly smiled at her nervousness.
“See you soon in the capital.”
“Yes, go quickly.”
Killian boarded the carriage with heavy steps. The couple exchanged longing glances until they could no longer see each other.
Back in the mansion, Emily leaned against the sofa, cheeks flushed, playing with her lips.
“Miss, are you tired?”
The butler approached, concerned.
“No? Why?”
“Duke Sadi has come to visit.”
“Is that so?”
Charles was still on Pirata Mountain, shutting down Giuliano organization hideouts and investigating other criminal activities.
‘I haven’t even properly thanked him yet.’
“I’ll go immediately.”
“Yes, he’s in the reception room.”
Emily quickly tidied her hair and clothes, then moved to the reception room.
Meeting him was awkward, to say the least. She had honestly shared everything, including how Killian planned to ask her to stay with Duke Sadi if they divorced.
Taking a deep breath at the door, it suddenly opened. Emily startled, and Charles chuckled softly.
“I noticed someone outside but you didn’t come in.”
“…I was about to enter.”
They sat facing each other.
“Are you well?”
“Yes, thanks to you. His Excellency saved me.”
“The Marquis found you. I only escorted you to the village.”
“Still, thank you.”
Despite Emily’s polite thanks, Charles sighed with a troubled expression.
“I heard from Marquis Star that you decided not to divorce.”
“Yes.”
That day, Killian and Charles had nearly come to blows. But there was nothing he could do about Emily and Killian’s mutual understanding.
“If you were to take on the name ‘Sadi,’ you could live a much easier life. Don’t you regret it?”
Emily met his gaze. The usually proud and aloof duke’s eyes were filled with genuine longing, making her heart heavy.
“I won’t regret my choice.”
Emily’s unwavering tone made Charles lower his head.
“That’s a pity.”
He had actually guessed what Emily’s answer would be.
“I was the first to know you, the first to confess my feelings…”
I thought we were destined.
He swallowed the rest of the sentence.
“You’ll meet your fate.”
Charles only gave a bitter smile in response. Emily said nothing more. She knew that anything she said might hurt him.
“Anyway, I’m going back to my estate now.”
The rooms, study, and dresses prepared for Emily were no longer needed. Returning to the estate would bring back memories of the excitement of preparing them. She didn’t want to return to the Sadi mansion for the time being.
“I hope you stay well.”
“I hope you’re happy too, Duke.”
Even with someone she didn’t have feelings for, Emily remained kind.
Even Emily’s kindness felt unbearably cruel to Charles.
