“엄마… 일어나.”
“Mom… get up.”
“동규야….”
“Dong-gyu…”
“제발 일어나라고!”
“I said, get up!”
절규하는 동규의 목소리가 경찰서 안을 울렸다.
Dong-gyu’s desperate voice echoed through the police station.
항상 아이들에게 미안하다 고개 숙이던 자신의 모습을 엄마를 통해 볼 줄이야.
It was like looking at himself in a mirror—always bowing his head in guilt toward the kids, now seen through his mother.
치욕스러웠다. 아니, 참을 수 없는 분노가 가슴을 치고 올라왔다.
He felt humiliation. No, an unbearable anger surged up his chest.
“동규야, 왜 그래. 죄송합니다. 어서 빨리 죄송하다고 말씀…”
“Dong-gyu, what’s wrong? Say you’re sorry…”
“뭐가 죄송한데. 도대체 뭐가 그렇게 죄송한데! 내가 뭘 잘못했는데!”
“What’s there to be sorry for? What did I do wrong?!”
눈에 불길이 타올랐다. 항상 두려움에 도무지 멈추지 않던 온몸의 떨림이 거짓말처럼 사라졌다.
Flames blazed in his eyes. The trembling that fear once caused disappeared as if it had never existed.
왜 이런 말을 지금. 이런 상황이 되어서야 할 수 있던 걸까. 왜 조금 더 빨리 말하지 못했던 걸까.
Why now? Why only in this situation could he speak? Why hadn’t he said it sooner?
이젠 두려움 대신 후회와 통한의 감정이 동규의 온몸을 다시 흔들고 있었다.

“네가 지금 뭘 잘못했는지를 몰라? 이거 완전 사이코패스 아니야!”
“You don’t even know what you did wrong? You’re a complete psycho!”
흥분한 진우 엄마가 무릎 꿇고 있는 동규 엄마를 거칠게 옆으로 밀치며 동규의 얼굴에 삿대질을 퍼부었다.
Jin-woo’s furious mother shoved Dong-gyu’s mother aside, finger-pointing aggressively at Dong-gyu.
“뭐 하시는 겁니까. 어머니, 괜찮으세요?”
“What are you doing, ma’am? Are you okay?”
놀란 최 반장이 쓰러진 동규 엄마를 일으켜 세웠다.
Chief Choi, surprised, helped Dong-gyu’s mother to her feet.
“야! 아무 잘못도 없는 민준이를 그렇게 만들어놓고, 뭐? 잘못이 없어? 이거 아주 뻔뻔한 놈이네.”
“Hey! You left innocent Min-jun like that… and you say you did nothing wrong? What a shameless kid.”
“누가 잘못이 없는데요.”
“Who’s saying he did nothing wrong?”
동규가 이글거리는 눈으로 엄마들을 노려보며 나지막이 중얼거렸다.
Dong-gyu glared at the mothers with burning eyes and muttered quietly.
“어머. 어머. 저 눈 좀 봐. 형사님 뭐 하세요. 저렇게 위험한 애를 그냥 두실 거예요?”
“Oh my… look at his eyes. Officer, what are you doing? Are you just leaving such a dangerous kid alone?”
“빨리 유치장에 처넣지 않고 뭐 하세요. 저런 애들이 나중에 사회악이 되는 거라고요.”
“Why aren’t you throwing him in the cell? Kids like him grow up to be social evils!”
핏대 올리며 소리치는 동규의 모습에 엄마들이 호들갑을 떨었다.
The mothers freaked out at the sight of Dong-gyu, veins bulging, shouting.
“그만들 좀 나가세요. 아직 조사 중이라고 말씀드리지 않았습니까. 나가세요.”
“Please leave. I told you, the investigation isn’t over yet. Go.”
최 반장이 동규를 자신의 뒤로 보내며 흥분한 엄마들을 출입구 쪽으로 몰기 시작했다.
Chief Choi moved Dong-gyu behind him and began pushing the agitated mothers toward the exit.
순간 동규의 입에서 터져 나온 피맺힌 절규에 최 반장을 비롯한 모든 사람의 발걸음이 한순간에 멈췄다.
In that instant, the blood-curdling scream from Dong-gyu froze everyone’s steps.
“도… 동규야- 왜… 왜… 그래. 네가 한 거 아니잖아. 빨리 네가 한 거 아니라고 말씀드려.”
“D-Dong-gyu… why… why are you…? You didn’t do it, right? Please tell me you didn’t!”
“그 새끼는 진작 그렇게 됐어야 했어. 왜 항상 나만 당하고 살아야 하는데!”
“That bastard should’ve gotten it long ago! Why is it always me who has to suffer?!”
자신의 팔을 붙잡고 애원하듯 매달리는 엄마를 뿌리친 동규가 나머지 아이들을 바라보며 눈에 핏대를 세웠다.
He shook off his mother clinging to his arm and glared at the other kids, veins bulging.
동규의 살기 가득한 외침에 아이들이 일제히 자기 엄마 뒤로 몸을 숨기며 고개를 숙였다.
The kids all ducked behind their mothers, bowing their heads at Dong-gyu’s ferocious shout.
“헛-”
“Hah-”
그 모습에 동규가 씁쓸한 헛웃음을 내뱉었다.
Dong-gyu let out a bitter laugh.
참 편했다. 힘 있는 집안의 자식들은. 저 든든한 벽 뒤로 몸을 숨기면 그만이었으니까.
Life was easy for rich kids. Hide behind a strong wall, and that was it.
“지금 직접 범행 자백한 거 같은데. 그만 사건 마무리하시죠.”
“Looks like he confessed directly. Let’s close the case.”
김 변호사가 옅은 미소를 지으며 최 반장을 바라봤다.
Lawyer Kim gave a faint smile, looking at Chief Choi.
인혜의 병원.
In-hye’s hospital.
“채린아. 너희 학교 사건 있던 날 이후에 별일 없었어? 혹시 머리가 아프다거나 어지럽다거나.”
“Chaer-in, has anything happened since the school incident? Headaches? Dizziness?”
“괜찮았어요.”
“I’m fine.”
“그 살려달라는 편지 있잖아요.”
“About that ‘save me’ letter…”
최 반장이 편지를 확인한 사실을 채린과 인혜에게 전하며 이야기를 이어갔다.
“그 편지 누가 보낸 건지 찾으셨어요?”
“Did you find out who sent the letter?”
채린이가 드디어 입을 열었다.
Chaer-in finally spoke.
“어. 찾았어.”
“Yes. I found out.”
“나한테 편지를 보낸 아이가 피의자예요.”
“The kid who sent me the letter is the suspect.”
인혜가 놀란 얼굴로 비명 지르듯 소리쳤다.

만 17세의 나이이지만 사건의 무거움으로 일반 형사재판으로 진행되었다.

“피고인, 쇠파이프로 피해자를 가격한 게 맞죠. 최소 10회 이상 피해자의 둔부를 비롯한 온몸을 가격한 거 인정하시죠.”
