Chapter 22
Come to think of it, how was Cyril?
She remembered the princess’s bright, radiant smile vividly, but Cyril’s expression didn’t come to mind as easily. Perhaps she had tried not to look at him.
He probably smiled. Whatever.
Rather than dwell on it, Adrienne decided to leave it at that.
Since the two—rumored to be engaged—had danced together, it was only natural to assume the atmosphere had been pleasant.
Should I ask him about the engagement…?
The thought rose for a moment but quickly sank again. Asking wouldn’t change anything, so better to let it go.
“When are you planning to return to Cassinel?”
“Well… I won’t stay long. Maybe sometime next week?”
“No plans this weekend?”
Adrienne, who had been answering dutifully, stopped walking at that.
When she looked at him with eyes silently asking what he meant, Cyril jerked his chin forward as if telling her to keep moving, then spoke calmly.
“There’s someone who wants to meet you.”
“Out of nowhere?”
“Yeah. Out of nowhere.”
He sounded as though he, too, hadn’t expected this to happen.
Adrienne, who had narrowed her eyes, opened them wide again and let out a thoughtful “Hmm.”
“Where do I need to go?”
“My estate.”
“…Is that really okay?”
“If we’re not doing anything improper, obviously.”
The look he gave her—as if telling her to abandon such a stupid idea if she had it—hit her square in the face.
Just that look alone made her feel like she’d suddenly been accused of having some grand scheme, but she ignored it. The way he smirked made it obvious he was teasing.
What should I do…
Her mind raced. She’d rather avoid unnecessary rumors, but this was the first request he’d made in years, and curiosity won out.
“…Send a carriage for me. One without a crest.”
“As you command.”
Having finally decided, Adrienne offered her condition with a prim tone.
Cyril nodded lightly. His long neck caught the moonlight unnecessarily well, prompting Adrienne to look away.
